Looking for a new best friend? Pit Bull’s have been seen throughout American history as beloved family members due to their friendliness and companionship to humans. Their presence in farms and ranches have proven to be valuable, as farmers and ranchers used the Pit as protection, to hunt, and to drive livestock. The breed is trusted so much that adult settlers in the 19th century left their Pit Bulls to watch the children while they worked in the fields. Though many Pits have a common aggression toward other dogs, this should not be seen as a fault; rather, this type of behavior is normal and is not a sign of a crazed canine.

As long as Pits have enough room to exercise and get their energy out, they can do well in apartments or smaller environments. They prefer warmer temperatures and are excellent farm dogs. Have kids? This breed is child-friendly and can serve as a guide dog as well. Dog training your Pit Bull can be fairly easy, as this breed is eager to please their owner. Their loyalty to their owner is fascinating, as evidenced by one Pit who took a bullet for his owner. Due to their high energy level and tendency of being aggressive, Pits are not fans of kennels and would be better off being dog boarded in a loving home if their doggie parents are out of town.

Pits originated in England, Ireland, and Scotland in the 19th century when people began experimenting with crossing bulldogs and terriers to make a dog that had the strength of a bulldog and the gameness of a terrier. In 1898, when the United Kennel Club was founded, Pits were recognized as a new breed: the American Pit Bull Terrier. It’s true what they say, Pits are a man’s best friend!
