A Dose of Love: Tips to Giving Your Dog Medicine

Posted by

There may come a time when pet sitting in Hollywood when you may need to administer your guest pets medicine.  This can make some people nervous, but there are guidelines to follow that will help make this process easier for both you and the dog.  As always, if you are unsure about something call Dog Vacay’s emergency help line or the dog’s veterinarian.

If the dog you are hosting when pet sitting in Hollywood requires medicine or supplements, make sure the owner brings it as well as any necessary information.  You will need to know when to give the medicine, the amount, and how to give it.  For example, some medicines need to be taken with food.  It can also be helpful to know possible side-effects of the medication, as well as what the medication is used for, so you can keep an eye out for any symptoms or behaviors that may require veterinary attention.  If you need to give the medicine without food, it is a good idea to have the dog standing with their back to a wall so that they cannot back away. Give the medication slowly, ensuring that it is being swallowed. If possible, have someone help hold the dog while you administer the medication.  Be sure to give the dog lots of praise after they have taken their medicine.

There are also a few items you should have in your medicine cabinet in case of emergencies.  3% hydrogen peroxide, topical antibiotic ointment, bandages and tape should be in the house in case the dog accidentally gets a cut.  Diphenhydramine and Pepto-Bismol or Kaopectate are also good things to have for allergic reactions and upset stomachs respectfully, though you should contact the dog’s vet before giving these.  Isopropyl alcohol is also helpful to have handy to help dry wet ears which can lead to ear infections in many dogs.
